Underused Woodland to be Restored with City of Trees Project

The City of Trees project aims to plant a tree for every person in the Greater Manchester area and restoring the underused woodland. The project started on July 20 and lasted until the 24th of July.
An installation has been made at RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, with Barcham Trees supplying the trees. City of Trees also hosted various activities. During the RHS Tatton Show, different topics were talked about including guerrilla gardening and natural dyeing with the use of pre-prepared dyes created from natural sources in the environment like bark, blackberries and nettles.
40 Field Maple trees were included in Amongst the Trees. In the middle of the trees is one huge signature tree Golden Rain. The trees are planted using a grid formation. There are also tree stumps where visitors can sit in and relax.
Bruntwood founder and City of Trees co-founder Michael Oglesby encouraged making time to sit and reflecting Amongst the Trees. According to Oglesby, reconnecting with nature is important and trees provide a lot of benefits. They improve biodiversity, capture carbon and provide people with great aesthetic value.
“We are delighted that City of Trees is part of RHS Tatton this year,” said Oglesby.
Heritage Trees aims to protect the local tree heritage of Greater Manchester including the hedgerows, orchards, woodlands and trees that are part of the history of the cities and towns. The 4-year project also records and celebrates the associations and memories of people of trees in their surroundings.
The project was sponsored by Heritage Lottery and the trees were brought by the team at City of Trees. It will create an exceptional online collaborative record of people’s photos, memories and stories of their local tree legacy and the maps that show where the trees of interest near them can be found.
Heritage Trees Technical Officer Beth Kelsall stated that each tree tells a story and they’re collecting some great recollections from people and their appreciation of hedgerows and trees in their neighborhood. According to Kelsall, they want to determine the trees that need their help so that they can protect them and extend their life. Trees have physical and emotional impact as they connect with people in various ways.
City of Trees is collaborating with The Woodland. During the RHS Tatton Show, 2,000 trees were given away to people in exchange for a story. Bruntwood is also planning to build its very own outdoor garden at the RHS Flower Show.
