El Nino: Our Drought Savior?

El Nino, the rainstorm, paid southern California a visit this winter and it really felt like it was the answer to our drought worries.  A heavy down pour of rain for a few days seemed to be the light at the end of the tunnel.  Unfortunately, this cannot be farther from the truth.  Although El Nino has added to our reservoirs, experts say that El Nino would need to visit us every month for the next year to really restore all of water reservoirs to appropriate capacities.  Since mother nature has recently given us a little allowance, us humans really need to do our part in water conservation.  One of the best ways to do this is replacing all the natural grass around your home with synthetic grass.

Turf needs little to no water all year-around and can stand up to all of the weather conditions mother nature throws at us, even El Nino. Compared to natural grass, synthetic grass turf is renowned for its durability and resilience to environmental factors such as weather and debris. It does not present the normal problems associated with adverse weather conditions like mud, flooding, or simply death due to lack of water.  Although the rain can be a great relief on our reservoirs, serious storms can also wreak havoc on natural grass lawns.  If puddles or flooding are a concern, artificial grass has backing that will allow water to drain evenly without standing.  Also, since synthetic grass drains quickly, your pets are less likely to have muddy paws or track in dirt as they might with natural grass lawns.  All in all, artificial grass stays green and lush all year with little maintenance required.  This is the perfect example of a symbiotic relationship between human and Earth, because your water bill substantially decreases and Earth gets to keep its water!

El Nino is bringing a lot of much-needed water to California, however it is not going to put an end to this historical drought. On the plus side, our community has developed improved conservation habits during this time but people should not forget that this is not a temporary phase but a new way of life.  A new lifestyle that must be taken on by the majority or we will be talking about a drought forever.  A reversal of California’s severe drought is not likely or even realistic in the foreseeable future and we are going to have to get used to the idea that California’s water problems are a long-term issue that is going to take a long time to solve.  Converting from natural grass and water-thirsty landscapes to synthetic grass and drought-tolerant plants are an easy, obtainable, and effective way to do your part!
