Field Feature Friday: Lusitano Stadium

Lusitano Stadium is a soccer stadium located in the New England town of Ludlow, Massachusetts, and home to USL Premier Development League’s Western Mass Pioneers.  The team was founded in 1997 after a friendly wager at the Gremio Lusitano club among friends led to team president Celso Correia to form the Western Mass Pioneers Soccer Team.  Since then, the Pioneers have reigned as regular season champions and hosted the National Championship match of USL’s Second Division before joining the PDL in 2010.  The team is committed exceptional and local talent while providing athletes the opportunity to advance in the US Soccer system.  The organization as a whole dedicates itself to present the game day experience at the highest levels possible, which has made the Pioneers consistently rank among the top teams in attendance. 

In 2015 Lusitano Stadium upgraded to a FIFA Certified, professional play synthetic turf field to enhance player safety and performance.  The Xtreme Turf system was selected and installed by ProGrass for the artificial grass’ proven durability and playability.  The artificial grass is engineered and tested to offer a superior playing surface for the players by offering a surface that is fast under the foot and provide sufficient firmness to limit fatigue injuries to the lower extremities of the player’s body.  The synthetic turf system also provides proper Rotational Resistance (traction) to ensure foot stability and to enable quick release of the shoes during rotation and traction movements.  The surface also maintains consistent and uniform ball-to-surface interaction for superior ball control.  Each of these components protects players so that the Western Mass Pioneers can play at their best.
