Layout

Firstly, you need to consider layout. You’ll need to map out the size and shape of your putting green. Take a look at it, does it work, will you be able to play golf on it? To mark out which part of the surface you’re going to lay the artificial grass on, use something to mark out the outside of the shape, spray paint possibly to mark out the perimeters. On this perimeter you’ll be edging and basing the grass.

Preparation

You’ll need to prepare the ground first before you do anything else. You’ll need to remove the turf you have there and the easiest way of doing this is to hire someone to do this. The people who do this are known as sod cutters, and they’ll get you an accurate, even surface. However, you don’t have to hire a sod cutter, you can do this yourself if you think you have a steady hand. You can then compact the soil use a compactor, so you have a solid foundation.

Edging

You can then edge the perimeters of the border of your artificial grass putting green. Adding your base will consist of laying base material, you can take measurements of the area you want to cover and take this to your supplier, so you get the right amount. Make sure the material, once it arrives, is evenly distributed around the area. Leave a 20mm gap between the edging and base.

Cups

You’ll want cups for where your golf balls land. In order to do this, you’ll need to mark where each individual cup will go, and then using a small shovel, dig a 2inch hole around the cup and make sure it’s deep enough. Then add concrete and water, and run the compactor over the actual cup so it will be level with the top of the base.

Unroll your turf and leave it for a while to unfurl. Lay it out and then see how it will fit your design then cut around with a utility knife. Join the lengths together so you’ll have a beautifully fitted green.
