How To Keep Your Artificial Turf Looking Great in the Rain

Uh, oh, the weather forecast calls for rain. What should you do? Don’t touch that grass! It will continue to look its exquisite best no matter how hard it rains or how much rain we get. As long as your grass is artificial turf, that is. Natural grass? You’ve got problems. But we’ll get to that in a moment.

First, wouldn’t it be just lovely if we did get lots of nice, juicy rain this year? Our entire state certainly needs it, but sadly, this winter is predicted to be a bit warmer and – yes – drier than average. But you never know, and we can always hope. One thing we do know for sure is that artificial turf remains resplendent in the rain just as it does in the middle of summer.

The part of an artificial turf installation that you can see on the surface (your “lawn”) is composed of two distinct elements – the turf itself (blades and backing) and infill. When you invest in superior quality turf and the right infill material, even heavy rain won’t damage your surface.

Rain is both good and bad for natural grass

Living grass needs water in order to survive. So rain is a welcome event. But, wouldn’t you know it? Naturally poor drainage due to heavy soil doesn’t allow the moisture to soak in fast enough. So much of the rain doesn’t really benefit the grass because it runs off instead. Or it puddles up in low spots, where it sits around growing mucky and inviting unpleasant things such as mold and mildew to join the party. Your grass is missing out on the thirst-quenching moisture, and it’s not looking so good, either.

Meanwhile, natural grass also has a tendency to develop thin or bare spots, if you have insect infestations or – especially – if you have a dog who loves to romp and roll on the grass. These spots turn to mud when it rains, inevitably leading to mud and crud being tracked into the house of paws and shoes.

Artificial turf doesn’t have these problems, so it doesn’t create problems – in your yard or inside your home.

Rain brings a welcome rinse

Natural or artificial, any turf benefits from an occasional rinse. That can wash away accumulated dust and dirt, leaving the grass cleaner and, well, greener looking. You can do this yourself during dry spells – using the hose to give your turf a refreshing rinse. With artificial turf, that’s pretty much all you need to do. If you still have natural grass, you’ll have to do all that other lawn care stuff – mowing, edging, feeding, weeding, etc. There’s nothing welcome about that.

Slip-sliding away . . . or maybe not

One thing a lot of people don’t fully realize is just how slippery natural grass becomes when it gets wet. That can be dangerous for the unsuspecting, making it easy to slip and fall. Oooops! Even if you aren’t physically injured, your pride may be. Artificial turf doesn’t get slippery when it’s wet, and because it drains away moisture so much more efficiently, you can feel confident walking across it in the rain. (This particular attribute is one reason so many homeowners choose to install artificial grass around their pools. It’s both prettier and safer.)

The upshot here is that it couldn’t be easier to keep your artificial turf looking good in the rain, because there really isn’t anything to do.
