Looking After Your Lawn During the Winter Months

Looking after your lawn during the winter months can be a difficult thing to do, due to the cold temperatures and dry conditions that come with the season. We have compiled a few tips on maintaining your lawn throughout winter to keep your grass healthy and fresh for spring.

Use it as little as possible

Probably the easiest way to protect your lawn during the winter months is to limit the amount of time that you use it. This is usually something that most people do anyway as it is too cold to use the garden. Walking on your lawn when it is wet or frosty will damage the grass and because the grass is not growing due to the cold, it will start to deteriorate quite quickly.

Is it safe to mow the lawn over winter?

A question we are often asked, you should only mow your lawn during winter when it is really necessary. If the weather is not too cold you should be able to mow your lawn, however if the grass is wet or if you are expecting cold conditions over the next few days, it is best to wait until it gets warmer to mow your lawn again.

I get a lot of leaves in my garden and use a leaf blower to get rid of them, is this safe?

It is definitely a good idea to remove leaves from your garden at any time of the year as leaves will prevent grass from growing as well as it could do. As grass is more vulnerable to damage during cold spells, it is unadvisable to use a leaf blower to remove leaves as this could cause damage to the lawn. It is better to lightly rake leaves during the winter as this will cause far less damage.

What else can I do before the spring to make sure my lawn stays healthy?

As use of the garden becomes almost impossible during cold spells, it is a great time to ensure that all of the equipment that you use during the summer is in good condition, ready to enjoy your lawn when the weather gets warmer. Make sure that you lawn mower is in good condition, and if it is necessary have it serviced.

What about artificial grass?

Artificial grass is normally used in sports like football and hockey for people to train on during winter periods, when the grass needs to be looked after. It has become increasingly popular for people to use artificial grass in the own gardens as it has many benefits over conventional grass.

The main benefit artificial grass has during the winter is that it is a low-maintenance option to conventional grass. It does not need to be mowed and will not become damaged in cold conditions.

It not only looks like real grass, it also allows moisture to pass through it, so that the soil stays moist and does not dry out and become hard.

Most companies now create artificial grass that is fully recyclable, making it an environmentally friendly option if you are concerned about the life of your lawn during winter.
