Maintaining Your Artificial Grass Lawn

Although artificial grass lawns are a low maintenance alternative to real grass if you want to get the most out of your lawn and give it the longest life expectancy possible it is important to give it some tender loving care every now and again.

There are a few tools that will be required to keep your lawn looking great, these are: a soft rake, a hard brush, a leaf blower or garden vacuum and some herbiside spray.

The most regular type of maintenance for your lawn will be to clear any debris and brush with a hard brush. It is recommended that the lawn is brushed about once a week and you should brush against the pile. In terms of debris on the lawn, as with anything, if debris such as leaves are left on the area for any period of time it will begin to create the ideal conditions for moss growth so it is important to clear fallen leaves etc away as soon as possible to prevent this from occurring.

It is possible for weed seed to be dropped on the lawn from birds flying over, if this happens and the lawn is not maintained you may start to see weeds beginning to grow in the sand in-fill, these are easily removed by hand. A leaf blower or garden vacuum is ideal to clear off any leaves and debris dropped from overhanging trees especially in the Autumn. You should never get weeds growing from underneath the surface as a well installed artificial lawn will have had a geo-textile membrane installed underneath the turf to prevent this from happening.

It is also recommended that a moss control product is used once a year to prevent the build up of any moss or kill off any that has begun to take hold.

If you have pets, especially dogs, it is important to hose down the area every now and again. Dog mess can be easily cleaned away by hand from the artificial grass lawn. The turfs are porous so the area will drain away any urine. Rain is the best cleaner for a synthetic lawn and you will only occasionally need to get the hose out. Rain water and water from the hose will drain exactly the same way a real lawn would.

It is also very important to take preventative measures and think ahead if you are going to be painting the house, shed or fence and your lawn is in close proximity to these areas. It is advisable to cover the lawn so no drips or spills are allowed to get onto it. It is also very important to not go near the lawn with a flame or cigarette as this type of heat would melt the pile.
