They’re Cheap-Looking and Unnatural

There’s a big difference between the green plastic “grass” that is left over in some pool houses and options like synthetic grass that are 100 percent eco-friendly. There are a variety of types of artificial synthetic grass available to suit every homeowner. The yarns used in the manufacturing of quality synthetic grass are virtually indistinguishable unless you have a guest that gets down on all fours with a magnifying glass. However, you do still get what you pay for.

They’re Hotter Than Real Turf

It is true synthetic grass gets hotter when baking beneath the sun, but it also cools down quicker than real turf. Rapid cooling has been reported when the turf is covered, and synthetic turf beneath a gazebo or other shady structure doesn’t get nearly as hot as regular turf in the same situation. Another way to keep the turf cool is to water it.

They’re Unhealthy

This is an old wives tale because people tended to be overly cautious about anything new or “unnatural.” However, the Connecticut Department of Public Health says there is absolutely no report anywhere of someone being harmed because of synthetic grass. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Agency agrees, being unable to find a single episode of toxic exposure.

They Hurt the Environment

According to the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Eco toxicity and the Environment, there are also no reports of artificial turf harming the environment. Obviously, the manufacturing of the turf may cause minute effects on the environment, but the Committee has found the amount to be next to nothing. In fact, some artificial turfs (such as running tracks) help the environment by making use of old tires.

They’re Not Safe

This is another myth that popped up for no good reason. The American Journal of Sports Medicine reports injuries are actually less likely to occur on fields where artificial turf is used. Overall, the number of injuries is comparable, but much less serious injuries occur on artificial turf.

Artificial Lawns Contribute to Global Warming

The use of artificial lawns is so minute, any impact on global warming is slim at best. However, skyscrapers that deflect heat and the process of laying millions of acres of parking spaces do greatly contribute to global warming.

Overall, the benefits of artificial lawns greatly outweigh the risks and concerns. There’s a lot of false information out there, and its important homeowners know the reality of artificial lawns. They’re more affordable, luxurious and realistic than ever. Now, you don’t even need small animal traps to keep the critters out of your lawn.
