Natural Grass vs. Synthetic Grass

There are many reasons why schools, hospitals, public facilities are installing synthetic greens or artificial grass lawns in their yards. One of the most popular reasons is the positive effect of the artificial turf on the environment. Mostly, these turfs are installed because they are low maintenance, and look perfect, year-round in any weather conditions.

A new debate involving the use of synthetic grass has also emerged. A set of environmentalists think that the growing incidence of global warming is attributable to the use of these artificial turfs. Synthetic turf fields are made of polyethylene fibers which simulates natural grass.

It is believed that artificial turfs give off much more heat than natural grass. The excessive heat produced by these turfs in urban areas has been described as the cause of ‘heat islands’. If these synthetic turfs are widely used, this would contribute to global warming.

The sustained use of these synthetic turfs poses a danger to the environment and public health. The materials which are used to make and clean the turf could leach into local water supplies and cause drainage problems. Also, it is believed that disposing the turf once it wears out will be a huge problem.

On the other hand, it is argued that an artificial turf does not have any divots or rough spots. Artificial turf is only slightly warmer than natural grass and does not contribute to global warming.

Natural grass fields pose their own risks. They have to be treated with chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The gasoline used to fuel mowers releases carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and other pollutants into the atmosphere, and in the process contributes to global warming. Also, natural grass fields are prone to pits, ruts, and puddles, which require frequent maintenance during playing seasons.

The decision to use or not to use artificial turf is an independent decision. This debate is a both sided debate and can not be concluded on any one front.
