The Advantages and Disadvantages Of Mulching Your Lawn

Mulching your lawn refers to the process through which one spreads organic matter over the lawn with a view to increasing the fertility of the soil in question. Generally, people do not sometimes the need for this and they might ask themselves why they should do all the work of mulching the lawn when they can afford to buy fertilizer from the store next door. In this article, I would like to bring out the advantages and the disadvantages of doing this.

The Advantages

One of the main advantages is the fact that it increases the soil fertility. In fact, this is usually the main reason why people do this. Whenever you mow your lawn and then you go ahead to dispose off the grass that you have cut from the lawn, you usually end up depleting the soil on which your lawn is growing on. With time, you will realize that your soil is becoming increasingly depleted and the lawn will not grow the way you would like it to be.

The other advantage of mulching your lawn is the fact that you end up improving the soil texture and the soil color. The texture of the soil is important because it helps determine whether or not the roots of the grass will be able to penetrate the ground that you would have planted them on.

Unlike inorganic fertilizer, mulching does not interfere with the life of useful organisms such as earthworms which live in the soil. They are useful in the sense that as they burrow through the soil, they el aerate the soil in a way that will not damage the roots of the grass.

Disadvantages

Despite the fact that mulching is recommended and that it has a lot of benefits to your lawn, there are also certain disadvantages that are usually associated with this noble activity. One of the major disadvantages is the fact that it can be a very tedious job. Mulch is something that is very bulky and moving it around can be a tedious job.

Getting mulch from places where you do not know can also be counterproductive because you might get some mulch from a place where there was a certain pest or disease, only for you to come and spread the same on your lawn. If this happens, then you are likely to infect your lovely lawn with some strange diseases and pests which you might not be able to deal with in the long run.

Anyway, plenty of useful things in this world have their own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the disadvantages listed here are not meant to discourage you against mulching your lawn, but are only meant to give you a warning beforehand.
