The Price Per Square Foot

A common question we get asked at least once per day is, “What is your price per square foot?” But, while starting with the “bottom line” is appealing, in the world of artificial grass lawns, it rarely results in an accurate picture of either the finished product or the final cost.

But while starting with the “bottom line” is appealing, in
the world of artificial grass lawns, it rarely results in an accurate picture
of either the finished product or the final cost. Here’s how that scenario
often plays out: Hopeful Turf owners begin vetting companies to build their
dream backyard. They call Company A for a quote; the estimate is $9.00per
square foot to build what hopeful Turf owners are looking for. Then, they call
Company B. That quote is $7.50 per square foot. Finally, they call Company C,
whose quote is only $6.00 per square foot. But what they don’t know is that
Company A’s quote was an all-inclusive price that included excavation, weed barrier
fabric, better drainage under the turf, performance infill product, fully
covered insurance and a high quality turf, while Company C’s quote was for a
base-level turf project without any weed barrier fabric, with the least amount
of base if any at all and inferior imported turf. This simple illustration
highlights why an earnest inquiry into “price per square foot” isn’t the best
way to begin your dream backyard journey. As a potential turf owner, you’re
often not comparing apples to apples, and without asking the right questions,
you may never even know what you are getting. Think of it this way: Asking how
much a project will cost without factoring in any variables is like asking how
much a tank of gas will cost without knowing whether you’re filling up with
regular unleaded or premium. “When it comes to this conversation, everything is
relative,” confirms Bill Hillstrom, owner of Golf Greens Texas Artificial Grass.
“That’s why it’s our goal to educate homeowners, so they can make choices that
make sense for them.”

So, with the myriad factors to consider — and knowing that price per square foot isn’t a reliable approach — how do you, as a potential turf owner, decide which company to choose? Here’s a good way to get started: The first step is to make a list. Spend time thinking through the “must-haves” in your dream back yard. Then, present that list of features to each company for an estimate. From there, you can confidently narrow your list to the one that will make your dreams come true.
