Any large garden project needs careful budgeting.  Creating a new lawn from turf is no exception.  So how much does turf cost?

Calculating turf cost.: What will I need to buy?

Laying turf involves more than just buying rolls of grass and unfurling them in your garden.  It’s vital that the ground is prepared properly and the soil contains all the right nutrients.

That means buying, borrowing or hiring tools and paying for a good quality pre-turfing feed.  You may also need to buy watering equipment too.

Turfing equipment list

• Spade or mechanical turf cutter to remove old vegetation
• Garden fork or rotovater to loosen and turn the soil
• Garden rake for levelling
• Pre-turfing fertiliser
• Laying boards – to avoid compacting the soil once it’s prepared
• Knife or edging tool for trimming turves
• Hosepipe and sprinkler
• Gloves to protect your hands
• Sun cream if you’ll be laying turf in spring or summer months
• Enough turf to cover the whole area with 5% extra to allow for wastage

Price of turf

I’m going to assume that your shed is full of suitable gardening tools and that you don’t need to buy a hosepipe or hire a rotovater.

Types of turf

There are four types of turf available from www.turfonline.co.uk.  Unless you’re planning a very specialised project, at least one of these turf types will be suitable for you.

For a family lawn

Choose either Garden Lawn turf or Jubilee turf.  Both are hard wearing and accommodating.  Neither are very demanding in terms of maintenance.  Just regular mowing and 3-4 feeds a year will keep them happy.

Jubilee turf is of a slightly higher quality that Garden Lawn turf.  It’s been matured in the field for longer so is stronger and easier to handle.

Lawn for dogs

See family lawn.

Smart lawn for the front garden or a show garden:

Jubilee turf is perfect for this.  If you have the time and the expertise to care for it, Royal Greens turf will also work well for this type of project.

Lawn under trees:

If you’re coping with low light conditions, Shadesman turf is the one for you.  It’s a good looking turf, relatively low maintenance and great in dappled shade.
