Which Lawn Should Be Crowned Britains Best Lawn 2017?

The three finalists for Britains Best Lawn have been announced.  Which is your favourite?

At Harrowden Turf we have a passion for natural lawns. We’ve been growing them for over 50 years and have supplied turf and grass seed to some of the most prestigious lawns in the Country.

But, laying turf (or sowing seed) is only the start of creating a beautiful lawn. It’s the maintenance regime that will decide what your lawn looks like in the longer term.

Every year, lawn lovers are invited to enter a competition to find Britains Best Lawn.

Generous prizes from sponsors EGO

This year (2017) the competition has been sponsored by EGO. EGO build cordless lawnmowers and gardening tools and have offered some very generous competition prizes.

The overall winner will recieve an EGO cordess lawn mower with a selection of tools worth £1,200

We’ll hear who has won  the 2017 Britains Best Lawn competition on 31st  August but we thought you might like to see the shortlist.

The Three Competition Finalists Are……

East Anglia’s finalist is John Tidswell from Peterborough

This lawn is immaculate. We’re guessing that John’s mower is extremely well maintained and that those blades are razor sharp. 10/10 for a precision cut around the tree.

John’s lawn is his pride and joy; he mows it every day during the peak of the lawnmowing season to keep it perfect and even wanted to mow it on Christmas Day!

Down in the South West we have Kevin Morgan in Exeter

Kevin Morgan in Exeter mows his lawn around three times a week and regularly changes the design of his lawn from precise stripes to symmetrical swirls and perfect circles, always keeping it beautiful and interesting.

Stripes and patterns make a lawn exciting and for me, they make mowing less of a chore. By changing the pattern regularly Kevin is avoiding “washboarding” a phenomenon where the grass blades permanently grow in one direction – it sounds good but actually looks dreadful.

A Garden in Doncaster that is used to being scrutinised

Stuart Grindle opens his garden to the public each year and has raised thousands of pounds for charity. This dedicated lawn lover works around 30 hours a week tending to his garden and cuts the grass twice daily every other day to keep grass at a precise five mm height!

Now that’s dedication, but it pays off.

This lawn is my personal favourite. Mainly because I like curves but also because it’s being used to showcase the bee-friendly plants in those beautiful borders. I do think that a lawn should harmonise and complement the whole garden and this one definitely does.

What does your perfect lawn look like?

Lawn expert David Hedges-Gower has always maintained that the perfect lawn is an individual thing. It’s what suits you, your lifestyle and your garden.

The three finalists have all gone for a weed-free, close mown velvety sward. It’s a labour of love to create an immaculate lawn and that’s not possible for everyone.  In my 20+ year career with Harrowden Turf and Turfonline I’ve seen all sorts of lawns and they’ve all been lovely. Parts of my own lawn are left longer and wilder so that they’ll support the wildflowers that support my honeybees.
