General

• Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch
• Brush heavy snow off hedges and conifers to prevent the branches from snapping.
• Hang fat balls and put out water for hungry birds.
• Get rid of slimy patches on the patio and paving by blasting with a pressure washer.
• Wash empty pots by scrubbing them with hot water and a mild detergent then rinse well.
• Check Dahlia tubers in storage and remove any that are showing signs of rotting.
• Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug.
• Clear up any weedy beds.
• Check tree ties and stakes on established plants.

Flowers

• Remove old leaves and debris from around plants.
• Start cutting back grasses.
• Take root cuttings.
• Lift and divide herbaceous perennials.

Trees and shrubs

• Continue planting trees and shrubs while they are still dormant.
• Plant roses, but avoid areas where roses were previously grown.
• Move established deciduous trees and shrubs, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.

Pruning

• Prune apple and pear trees.
• Prune wisteria.

Vegetables

• Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season.

Pond

• Monitor the water level of your pond, as hard frosts can cause defects in the liner.
• Rake out fallen leaves or shake off those that have gathered on protective netting.

Garden structures

• In dry spells, you can treat timber structures, including garden furniture, with wood preservative and stain but only do this in a well-ventilated space.
• Check and repair pergolas and arches.

Lawn
