What is the lifespan of Astroturf?

The lifespan of artificial grass is lengthening all the time as technology improves, but it does depend to some extent on the climate and the level of wear and tear it receives. Let’s look at each of these in turn.

Climate

Artificial grass is great in any climate, which is part of its attraction. There are never periods when your grass is brown and parched during heat waves and hosepipe bans, and neither will you find it waterlogged in winter. Artificial grass will allow rain to seep away just in the way a natural lawn should. In very hot climates artificial grass does not last quite as long as it would in a normal UK climate. In the Middle East and parts of the United States, for example, where artificial turf is widely used, temperatures are extremely high for most of the year. Even with light usage in hotel grounds, for example, artificial grass will degrade in about 9-10 years. Most of the damage comes from the UV rays in the sun. In a UK climate however, astroturf will last from between 10-15 years.

Useage

The amount of wear and tear an artificial grass lawn experiences will affect its lifespan. This doesn’t apply to normal domestic wear and tear, such as children’s play. But if you use it for sports areas – football areas or tennis courts – then regular heavy use will shorten the lifespan of the lawn, unless you chose a grass that is specifically suited to that level of traffic.
